How to say "happy hour" in Mandarin
The phrase "happy hour" in Mandarin is almost exactly what you'd expect.
Start with the word for happy, which is 快乐, pronounced kuai4 le4. (The word 快 actually means "fast", "quick" or "swift", and the word 乐 means "happy", "cheerful" or "laugh". Together, 快乐 = quick-laugh = happy.)
Next, add the word 时, pronounced shi2, which means "O'clock", "time", "when", "hour", "season", and "period".
So far, we have 快乐时. But we're not quite done yet.
Finally, add the word 光, pronounced guang1, which means "light", "ray", or "bright". I'm not sure why we need this word here, but we do.
Happy hour = 快乐时光 = quick-laugh-hour-bright = kuai4 le4 shi2 guang1.
