The Chinese Government allows you to buy knock off clothing and fake DVDs in any of the tourist traps around Beijing, and they don't seem to mind the blatant shopping for ‘girlfriends' on zhantai.com, but if you try to buy a travel guide like Lonely Planet China or Let's Go China, they will have to put their foot down. In any large book store in Beijing, you can find these travel guides for all countries OTHER than China. I asked about this conspicuous absence of Lonely Planet China from the shelves and found out that the government has banned these books. I'm glad to see that the Chinese government has their priorities in order; they want you to contribute your money for black market goods and prostitution, but God forbid you get a discount hotel in China or find out where the good restaurants are.

Such is the crazy irony of China. I've been four times, and even without living there, I've come in contact with some of those crazy conundrums. I'm studying Chinese, and I enjoy your blog. Mine isn't entirely focused on China, but I do write about it a lot. I work as an international business reporter, so I get a lot of ammo.
